I always thought coaches got fired for losing. On the same day he sent an email refusing to apologize for his team's success, a Texas high school girls' basketball coach was terminated. The coach, Micah Grimes, of Dallas' Covenant School, had come under fire for winning a game 100-0, making national news.
On Sunday, the coach sent an email to the Dallas Morning News, stating he would not apologize for his teams wide margin of victory, apparently in response to a statement on the Covenant School website criticizing the success of the team and the coach's judgement, saying "It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened. This clearly does not reflect a Christlike and honorable approach to competition." The weird statement was signed by board chair Todd Doshier. The statement neglected to mention what scriptural or doctrinal precept had been violated by the success of the team and coach.
The bizarre stance of the school board raises an intriguing question. Does charity belong on the field/court of play? Are we not to do our best in every endeavor, win, lose, or draw? Is there not some lesson to be learned by losing 100-0 that far outweighs the momentary benefit of a "gimme goal"? And just what does the school board suggest that the coach do... inspire his players to do things half-assed?
Someone needs to put a stop to this kind of nonsense. We here at Evil Conservative Radio celebrate Coach Micah Grimes' success with his girls, and I'm pretty sure he won't have to travel far to find a new job. Maybe his first call should be to the team they beat 100-0... I bet they could use a guy like him.
As to the reason for always going 100% on the field of play and taking your lumps with your victories? People who would temper success with charity may win today, but they'll for sure lose later in bigger things. I think Gen. Douglas MacArthur, maybe the all-time greatest WINNER in American history (and who also got fired for wanting to WIN), said it best:
"Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that, on other day, in other places, will bear the fruits of victory."
