NY's Gov Picks Conservative Dem for Hillary Seat, Enrages Libs

Surprising pretty much everyone, NY Governor David Patterson is expected to announce today that he has selected upstate conservative Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the seat vacated by new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, infuriating the Dems who had been aggressively lobbying behind the scenes for the patronage peach.

Gillibrand, an upstate congesswoman has defeated two strong Republican challenges in two election cycles. Unusual for a Dem, she did it with the help of the NRA, voted against the bailouts, and has not been supportive of gay marriage.

Liberal downstate Dems, like Andrew Cuomo, Carolyn McCarthy, and Steve Israel, are reported to be furious with the pick, with several of them threatening to challenge the governor in the state primary next year.

New York conservatives - both of us - are pleased to see the liberal wing of the Democrat Party repudiated. Don't get too excited... she's still pro-choice and thus ineligible for the Evil Conservative vote, but anyone who gets the downstate liberal Dems so angry must have some good in them.

As an ex-Republican for ten years now, and a proud member of the New York Conservative Party, I'm willing to try and give a fair shake to some new blood in Washington that isn't off-the-dial left. How could she be any worse than some of the RINOs we have populating the Senate now?

I'm betting most New Yorkers will be fair too. Ms. Gillibrand has one huge advantage over he more liberal party associates... when push comes to shove voters are likely to see that SOME of her values, at least as represented by the support of the NRA and by votes like the one she made against TARP, are much more in line with theirs than with the more liberal wing of the party.
