Krauthammer: Don't Misunderestimate Obama; Second Act on the Way

One of my favorite pundits, the brilliant and curmudgeonly quadriplegic Charles Krauthammer reminds us why we can't be overly optimistic about this year's elections. No matter what happens, Obama's self-interest and ideological commitment to tyrannical liberalism ensures the next few years are going to be a bumpy ride

Friday, July 16, 2010

In the political marketplace, there's now a run on Obama shares. The left is disappointed with the president. Independents are abandoning him in droves. And the right is already dancing on his political grave, salivating about November when, his own press secretary admitted Sunday, Democrats might lose the House.

I have a warning for Republicans: Don't underestimate Barack Obama.

Consider what he has already achieved. Obamacare alone makes his presidency historic. It has irrevocably changed one-sixth of the economy, put the country inexorably on the road to national health care and, as acknowledged by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus but few others, begun one of the most massive wealth redistributions in U.S. history.

Second, there is major financial reform, which passed Congress on Thursday. Economists argue whether it will prevent meltdowns and bailouts as promised. But there is no argument that it will give the government unprecedented power in the financial marketplace. Its 2,300 pages will create at least 243 new regulationsthat will affect not only, as many assume, the big banks but just about everyone, including, as noted in one summary (the Wall Street Journal), "storefront check cashiers, city governments, small manufacturers, home buyers and credit bureaus."

Third is the near $1 trillion stimulus, the largest spending bill in U.S. history. And that's not even counting nationalizing the student loan program, regulating carbon emissions by Environmental Protection Agency fiat, and still-fitful attempts to pass cap-and-trade through Congress.

But Obama's most far-reaching accomplishment is his structural alteration of the U.S. budget. The stimulus, the vast expansion of domestic spending, the creation of ruinous deficits as far as the eye can see are not easily reversed.

These are not mere temporary countercyclical measures. They are structural deficits because, as everyone from Obama on down admits, the real money is in entitlements, most specifically Medicare and Medicaid. But Obamacare freezes these out as a source of debt reduction. Obamacare's $500 billion in Medicare cuts and $600 billion in tax increases are siphoned away for a new entitlement -- and no longer available for deficit reduction.

The result? There just isn't enough to cut elsewhere to prevent national insolvency. That will require massive tax increases -- most likely a European-style value-added tax. Just as President Ronald Reagan cut taxes to starve the federal government and prevent massive growth in spending, Obama's wild spending -- and quarantining health-care costs from providing possible relief -- will necessitate huge tax increases.

The net effect of 18 months of Obamaism will be to undo much of Reaganism. Both presidencies were highly ideological, grandly ambitious and often underappreciated by their own side. In his early years, Reagan was bitterly attacked from his right. (Typical Washington Post headline: "For Reagan and the New Right, the Honeymoon Is Over" -- and that was six months into his presidency!) Obama is attacked from his left for insufficient zeal on gay rights, immigration reform, closing Guantanamo -- the list is long. The critics don't understand the big picture. Obama's transformational agenda is a play in two acts.

Act One is over. The stimulus, Obamacare, financial reform have exhausted his first-term mandate. It will bear no more heavy lifting. And the Democrats will pay the price for ideological overreaching by losing one or both houses, whether de facto or de jure. The rest of the first term will be spent consolidating these gains (writing the regulations, for example) and preparing for Act Two.

The next burst of ideological energy -- massive regulation of the energy economy, federalizing higher education and "comprehensive" immigration reform (i.e., amnesty) -- will require a second mandate, meaning reelection in 2012.

That's why there's so much tension between Obama and congressional Democrats. For Obama, 2010 matters little. If Democrats lose control of one or both houses, Obama will probably have an easier time in 2012, just as Bill Clinton used Newt Gingrich and the Republicans as the foil for his 1996 reelection campaign.

Obama is down, but it's very early in the play. Like Reagan, he came here to do things. And he's done much in his first 500 days. What he has left to do he knows must await his next 500 days -- those that come after reelection.

The real prize is 2012. Obama sees far, farther than even his own partisans. Republicans underestimate him at their peril.

Obama Linked to Phony Tea Party Smear Video

Shocking, yet somehow not surprising...

Think Progress Caught Using Liberal-Manufactured Signs From ‘Crash the Tea Party’ as Evidence of Tea Party Racism

by Bob Owens

Do you remember the abortive “Crash the Tea Party” movement? It was the brainchild of a liberal that explicitly called for progressives to commit fraud in order to attempt to discredit the Tea Party protests.

At Pajamas Media we covered the abortive effort extensively, and made note of the very real bigotry the Crashers unwittingly revealed… in themselves.

This morning, I came across this video from Think Progress:

Typical of the kind of dishonest effort Think Progress produces, the video heavily edits clips so that you have no idea what the context of a statement is or precisely what someone they’ve edited is trying to say.

Worse, the video “liberally” makes use of counter Tea Party protesters and infiltrators, including “Crash the Tea Party” drones, in order to fabricate their view.

The guy who claims “I’m a proud racist, I white” was actually driven out of the Tea Party protest he attempted to infiltrate.

Nice work, Think Progress!

Seconds later, Think Progress stitches together a series of posters they claim belong to Tea Party protesters.

Really, Think Progress?

Did you not think we’d remember the amusing signs your fellow liberals created for their little abortive “Crash the Tea Party” stunt in Boston? Let’s just say that some were more amusing than others, and some just showed pathetic and angry progressives often are.

There is an old saying that you’re entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.

At Think Progress, they’re ready to make up the “facts,” yet again.

Update: Oh, Think Progress… did you really think you’d get away with it?

Also, RightKlik discovers that another of the men featured in the video made his comments in 2006… well before the Tea Party was even a dream.

Update: Think Progress even tried to portray the father of a bi-racial boy as a racist as he speaks in front of his own son.

Seriously… is there anyone in this video who is what Think Progress says they are?

Obama Condemns Attack on Mosque; What About Islamic Attacks on Churches?

In one of his least surprising moves, Ayatollah Obama came out strong against the double suicide bombing of a mosque in Iran, calling it "outrageous" and "intolerable." I wonder why he's silent when Christian places of worship are attacked by Muslims, which happens all the time. Like this attack in Pakistan, or the crackdown on Protestants in Iran, or the jailing of Christians in Uzbekistan, or violence against missionaries in India, or the prosecution of Christians in Muslim lands for blasphemy? How the American public has allowed Obama's taqiyya farce to go on this long is beyond me.

Obama: Iran mosque bombing outrageous, intolerable

Associated Press, 07.16.10, 12:10 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is condemning the double suicide bombing against a mosque in Iran as an outrageous terrorist attack.

In a statement Friday, Obama says the deaths of innocent civilians in their place of worship is an "intolerable offense" and says those who carried out the attack must be held accountable. Obama says the U.S. stands with the families of those killed and with the Iranian people.

At least 27 people were killed in the bombing. Iranian authorities say a Sunni insurgent group carried out the bombings against the Shiite mosque to avenge the execution of its leader.

How to Tell It's Summer: NOAA Says Earth's Hotter Than Ever

Is it just me, or do they do this every summer?

NOAA: June, April to June, and Year-to-Date Global Temperatures are Warmest on Record

July 15, 2010

Last month’s combined global land and ocean surface temperature made it the warmest June on record and the warmest on record averaged for any April-June and January-June periods, according to NOAA. Worldwide average land surface temperature was the warmest on record for June and the April-June period, and the second warmest on record for the year-to-date (January-June) period, behind 2007.

The monthly analysis from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center, which is based on records going back to 1880, is part of the suite of climate services NOAA provides government, business and community leaders so they can make informed decisions.

Global Temperature Highlights – June

Leaked: 2nd Half of Obama's Term Will Emphasize His "Other" Ethnic Half

Rumors are floating that during the second half of Obama's term as President he'll focus less on his "black" half, and more on his "whiteness." Insiders are saying that Obama's disappointed with the focus he's put on his race so far, and that to even things out, he plans to be "less ethnic," starting in January.

Reports are that his handlers, in the wake of allegations of favorable treatment of African-Americans by the Justice Department, are planning a radical make-over and, in the words of one anonymous White House source, "make good on the promise he made to be the first post-racial president in history." The source went on to say, "this is just the sort of move we need to make. This will cater to the racists that make up most of America."

Another source close to the administration said , "We're hoping we can get him into the Ku Klux Klan. It did wonders for Robert Byrd's political career, and after all, it's what white Democrats have done for generations."

So far this is all unconfirmed, but some images of the proposed makeover are now starting to hit the 'net, so here's the picture that Obama's hoping will change his image among American voters. Do you like him any better now?

Democrat Logic is No Logic at All

Today on Fox News there was a knock-down drag-out catfight between Megyn Kelly (right) and Kirsten Powers (wrong) about the strange dismissal of charges against the New Black Panthers' thoroughly YouTube'd intimidation of voters in Philadelphia, and DOJ attorney Jay Christian Adams' allegations that there is a de facto policy in place at the Voting Rights Division of the Department of Justice to refuse prosecution of some reports of voter intimidation, depending upon the skin color of the parties involved. Megyn demolished Kirsten Powers in a way that really should have been humiliating, but Powers just kept changing her argument and denying her own statements so often that it made me wonder - if Megyn Kelly's arguments were playing to rational people, to whom was Kirsten Powers' intellectually dishonest verbal scurrying targeted?

That's when it occurred to me that I've seen this before. Not the Kelly/Powers mismatch, but the patently dishonest, infantile, facile debating tactics being used by Powers. Anyone with half their brain working properly would have felt humiliated to share a position with her, but we all know that most of the Democrats in America agree wholeheartedly.

When Powers starts off by saying "It's no big deal," and "count me as someone who doesn't care," thousands of viewers were like, "Yeah... you tell 'em, Kirsten." And when, after being force-fed reality for a few minutes by Megyn, Powers ultimately ended up attacking Bush, there were probably just as many people out there in TV-land agreeing with her, and it's pretty likely that, in the end, few minds were changed.

Those people are Democrats, and evidently, despite the most expensive free education system in the known universe, things like logic, reason, and rationale have no place or meaning in their universe. To this kind of a diseased mind, emotional illogic and hysterical attacks against straw men created for the special purpose of weaseling out of whatever corner they may find themselves in right now are brilliant tactics and, in their minds, really show conservatives to be whatever kind of hate-filled meanies that liberals fantasize conservatives to be. They just adore the Keith Olbermanns and Chris Matthewses of the world, who are experts in this new kind of non-logic. In fact, I've seen this pathetically invalid argument structure so often now that I've come up with a name for this "strategy" - debate, obfuscate, and correlate.

Here's how it goes. First comes the debate. No point in preparing or understanding the issue. Just take the party line and dig in - you're going to be here a while. In this argument, it's Kirsten Powers saying, about the New Black Panthers' intimidation of voters and Obama's DOJ refusing to prosecute, that it wasn't really intimidation, and that no one cares about the issue anyway - can't we all just make it go away? Megyn Kelly then proceeds to do a far-better-than-average job of pointing out the blatant violation of law, the witness testimony, the video evidence, etc, etc, etc, proving Powers to be full of it.

Next, realizing that she's dead wrong on the issue, Powers starts obfuscating - implying racism, insisting she understands the case, and backpedaling her position - now, it seems, Ms. Powers thinks what happened was a genuine crime, and the Obama administration did the best they could - after all, they got an injunction, didn't they? Megyn Kelly, of course, takes all this crap and shreds it like a phony lunch receipt, making it clear that the Obama DOJ was race-oriented in this decision, and showing how they ignored the law to benefit the Black Panthers.

The third step is the most predictable one, and the one that Obama's minions are still treating like the silver bullet it may have been 18 months ago - correlate whatever mess Obama's in to Bush, and make whatever you're accusing Bush of sound worse than whatever Obama's being accused of. We all know how that goes - some video of Obama comes out with him ogling a girl's butt, or he bows to a Muslim king, or he unconstitutionally takes a side job working against American sovereignty, and the Democrat talking heads all say in unison on of two things - "Yeah... but Bush started a war," or something to that effect, or "Racism!" Kudos to Megyn Kelly for trying to short-circuit Powers in that maneuver today, but we'd better get used to it - Debate, Obfuscate, and Correlate. This silver bullet's been fired enough times, already.

Where's Obama's DOJ on This? Bomb Injures Oil Exec's Wife in Houston

Once again the violent anger of the left is boiling over, and once again, someone gets hurt. It'll be interesting to see how Eric Holder and Obama's Justice Department react to this. After all, odds are pretty good that the perpetrator of this cowardly act was an Obama campaign volunteer. Hey, does anyone know where Bill Ayers was Friday?

Local and federal investigators were at a northwest Houston home Friday night where an explosion sent a woman to the hospital.

The woman was opening a package left at her doorstep in the 2100 block of Seamist Court Friday evening. She had found the shoe-sized box in front of her home about a day ago but didn't decide to open it until around 6:30pm Friday.

The woman, who officials said is in her 60s, took the box to the backyard and opened it on the patio. That's when it exploded.

"Don't know where it came from -- postal service or whether it was dropped off. I don't have that information yet," said HPD Lt. Colin Weatherly."The person went outside, basically opened the packaged; it detonated."

Residents told Eyewitness News that when the bomb went off, it sounded like a transformer blew.

The woman was transported to Northwest Memorial Hospital with facial injuries that are not life-threatening.

Officials with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, as well as the Houston Police Department's homicide and bomb squad were at the scene investigating.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was targeted, however, Eyewitness News found out the home is owned by an oil company executive.
