Why I Feel Safest Flying Right After a Big Crash

Last night's horrible airplane disaster in Buffalo means that the media is filled today with stories featuring a traveler or two saying how terrified they are to fly right after a big crash like that. I'm sure some people really ARE scared to fly immediately following an incident like that, but they really shouldn't be. Right after an incident like that might actually be the SAFEST time to fly.

What do I mean? I have three good reasons.

1. Statistically speaking, flying is safer than driving. Take LA to New York. Technically speaking, it's already 261 times safer to fly than to drive, and the odds of sequential accidents or plane crashes are almost infinitesimal. I mean, it could happen, but that's really a big part of how we all knew 9/11 wasn't any kind of an accident, wasn't it? Because that kind of stuff just doesn't tend to happen randomly.

2. Pragmatically speaking, don't you think that, in the wake of an accident like last night's, the people running our airports and managing such things are on their toes? Lord knows I would be. And How about the pilots and the crew? Think they might take things just a little extra seriously after an airline accident?

3. Personally speaking, right after a crash like last night's, I usually find I can get an aisle seat with no one next to me and stretch out... mainly because a lot of people get scared to fly.

So the next time the media runs a story like that tonight, with the requisite traveler telling you how nervous they are, ask yourself- why is that the story they choose to play? Why does the media prefer us to be panicked and despondent? And whom does our panic and despondence benefit?
