There are only a couple of possibilities here:
1. He thinks there has been an earthquake in his "home" state of Hawaii. He'd be right on this point, as Hawaii HAS had earthquakes. Just not in the last 35 years. 1975 was the last one.
2. He thinks Haiti is part of the United States (the 57th state, perhaps?).
Gifted speaker. Soaring oratory. Ivy-league education. Professorial. Indeed.
